My thesis research examines human-AI relationships, looking into how users conceptualize their bonds with AI companions like CharacterAI and ChatGPT.
Currently, I am in the interview phase of my study, conducting qualitative research to understand how participants experience and describe their relationships with AI chatbots. This research builds on existing literature that shows users form meaningful connections with AI systems, often viewing them as friends, companions, or romantic partners.
The interview data I am collecting will help highlight how users give meaning to these relationships and what the boundaries between human and AI agency are in meaningful contexts. By researching these intimate digital relationships, my work aims to deepen our understanding of human connection in the age of artificial intelligence and contribute new theoretical insights to the field of human-computer interaction.
